Travel in Chandigarh

Location

Chandigarh is situated at the foot of the Shivalik range. There are hardly any forest in this union territory, except for small tracks of forest by acquiring some areas on lease from Punjab and Haryana states. There is about 2542 hectares of forest area in Kansal and Nepali forest and some areas in Raipur Khurd village of Chandigarh union territory.

Chandigarh is connected to Delhi (daily) and Amritsar (bi-weekly) by flights of Indian Airlines. There is also a weekly flight to Leh from Chandigarh. Jet Airways has daily flights to Chandigarh from Delhi. The airport is 11 km away from the main city.

The Chandigarh airport is 12 km. from the city centre.

Railway Stations

Chandigarh Railway Station is about 8 km from the City Center in Sector 17. Shatabdi Express and Himalayan Queen provide two train connections every day between Chandigarh and Delhi. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking and the Corporation buses ply to and from the railway station to coincide with the arrival and departure of important trains.

The railway station is 7 km away from the city centre. It is well connected to the major cities of India like Delhi (238 km), Bikaner (575 km), and Jodhpur (827 km).

By Road

Chandigarh is well connected by road to almost every small or big town in northern India. Frequent buses ply from Chandigarh to Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and even Rajasthan. One has a varied choice that includes luxury buses, ordinary buses and taxis, all of which are readily available.

Chandigarh is connected by excellent road network. The N.H.21 and 22 are the main roads linking the city.
