Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It was earlier known as Madras. It is the fourth largest city in India. It is located on the south-east coast of India. It faces the Bay of Bengal. Chennai is an important port.
Chennai can be divided into two parts. The old city, known as George Town, is towards the west of the port. The other part is towards the South of George Town. The main road, Anna Salai, runs through this part of the city. The main offices of the state government are located in Chennai. The Governor, the Chief Minister and other ministers live in the city. Chennai is warm throughout the year. The coastal areas get pleasant sea breezes. The city gets more rain during winter than during summer. People mostly wear cotton clothes throughout the year. Rice is the main food of the people. They eat it with sambhar and curd. Idli, dosa, vada and uttapam are also popular snacks. All the main Indian festivals are celebrated in Chennai. Pongal, a harvest festival, is the most important. It is celebrated in January. The celebrations last three days. Tamil Nadu is the home of Bharatanatyam, the famous dance. Most people speak Tamil. English is also widely spoken. Chennai has always been famous for its cotton textiles. It has factories which make railway coaches, cars and trucks. Chennai has a large film industry. Hundreds of films are made every year. The main attraction of the city is the Marina Beach. It is the second longest beach in the world. The VGP Golden Beach is very popular with children because of its rides and a toy train. Other places of tourist interest in Chennai include Fort St George, Gandhi Mandapam, Government Museum, St Thomas Church, Chennai Art Gallery, Snake park, Kapaliswarar Temple and parthasarathi Temple.
