The Department of Orthopaedic Surgeryof Malar Hospitals (click here to read about the hospital) is a reputed centre for trauma care in India.

The team is headed by Dr.Nandkumar Sundaram, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and one of the pioneers in Joint Replacement and Arthoscopic Surgeries in India. The other members of the team are Dr. G. Thiruvengita Prasad, Dr.R. Krishna Kumar and Dr.Dayanand Kaliaperumal.

The orthopaedic team offers comprehensive, specialized care for all trauma and cold orthopaedic conditions. All out-patients are treated in the orthopaedic clinic. Intra-articular injections and needling of trigger spots are performed in the injection clinic as out-patient procedures. In-patient and post-operative patients are seen during the twice-a-day ward rounds. All orthopaedic and trauma surgeries are performed in a state-of-the-art exclusive orthopaedic operation theatre, which is equipped with an image intensifier, orthopaedic fracture table, arthroscopy system, swiss-made operating instruments and all orthopaedic implants and prostheses.

The highly experienced team of anaesthesiologists can handle any emergency situation or high- risk patient. We have highly experienced operating - theatre staff and technicians who ensure smooth and safe conduct of all surgeries.

All trauma and orthopaedic surgeries are performed in our hospital. To list a few:
  • Plate osteosynthesis of fractures
  • Closed interlocking nail fixation of fractures of the femur, tibia and humerus
  • Buttress plating of complex intra- articular fractures
  • Fractures of the vertebrae with or without injury to the spinal cord
  • Ruptures of ligaments and tendons, esp. in sportspersons
  • Recurrent dislocation of the shoulder, esp. in sportspersons
  • Arthroscopic surgery of the knee for diagnosis and treatment of meniscal injuries, cruciate ligament ruptures, osteochondritis dissecans and osteoarthritis
  • Surgeries for all congenital deformities of the limbs and spine
  • Surgery for all skeletal tumours
  • Joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow joints
  • Revision joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder joints The orthopaedic team performs about 300 intramedullary nailings and 150 joint replacement surgeries in a year.

    Academic Activities:

    The department regularly receives rotating resident interns, MRCS trainees, DNB trainees and interested observers. The students are trained in orthopaedic case examination and presentation and basic surgical skills by the senior consultant. The students also take an active part in the out- patient clinic, injection clinic, plaster application and in- patient ward rounds. They are also involved in the on- going research projects.

    Research Activities

    Research is currently focusing on the following areas:
  • Arthroscopic debridement for degenerative arthritis of the knee- Long- term results
  • Brace-free rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction- Long- term results
  • Modified Bristow's procedure for recurrent dislocation of the shoulder- Long- term results.
  • Comparison of results of conservative and surgical treatment viz. plating or intramedullary nailing of humerus fractures

    Audit

    The performance of the department is regularly evaluated in a monthly meeting of the medical audit committee. Weekly morbidity and mortality meetings are held in the hospital. The performance of the orthopaedic team has been rated very highly in all these forums.
