The stadium also witnessed the birth of the celebrated Indian doubles pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi who won the first three editions of the Goldflake Open. The complex has five hard courts including the floodlit centre court which has a seating capacity of about 5800.
SDAT Tennis Stadium of Chennai remains the host of the annual Chennai Open ATP Tennis championships that takes place in the first week of January. The stadium was the venue for the South Asian Federation Games of 1995. The 1997 Indian Open tennis tournament was also played here. The 'Goldflake Open' game between Patrick Rafter and Boris Becker was held at this stadium in 1998 in which the former emerged victorious. The December-January (2008-09) Chennai Open will be played here. In the 2007 event, Xavier Malisse emerged as the winner of the singles title and doubles with partner Dick Norman. Some of the nearby attractions are:
