How to reach

Road

Delhi probably has the best roads India has to offer, but that's only in proper New Delhi, so do not let that carry you away. The rest of the drive, from where you are coming in from may not be a song. The capital is well connected by road to almost all parts of India.

Well connected by good road network. The main bus station is at Kashmiri Gate near old Delhi Railway stations, known as Inter stte Bus Terminal (ISBT).

Bus Stand

Delhi is said to be one of the oldest existing cities in the world, along with Damascus and Varanasi 1 Leave home well in time, so that you won't have to run to catch the bus. 2.At the bus stand, always follow the queue. Board the bus only after it has come to a halt, without rushing in or pushing others. 3.While in the bus, shouting or making a noise is definitely bad manners. Such behavior can also distract the driver. 4.Do not board or alight at a bus stop other than the one decided by the school. Never board and alight at a red light crossing or unauthorized bus stop. 5.Always hold onto the handrail if standing in a moving bus, especially on sharp turns. 6.Do not sit, stand or travel on the footboard of the bus. 7.Do not put any part of your body outside a moving or stationary bus. 8.Always adhere to the bus safety rules.

Rail

The headquarters of the Northern Railway Delhi is the most well connected railhead in the country. It's four stations - New Delhi, Old Delhi, Delhi Cantonment and Hazrat Nizamuddin - are serviced by trains to all corners of India. All the Rajdhanis no matter which part of the country they originate from come here. The luxury trains Palace on Wheels and Royal Orient, which, chug off from Delhi, offer unforgettable experiences.

Delhi is connected by rail with most parts of the country.

There are main railway stations at both Delhi and New Delhi. Trains for Rajasthan and Gujarat leave only from Delhi but most other trains call at both stations. A few trains leave from Hazrat Nizamuddun station near Humayun's Tomb.

Reservations for all destinations are now made at New Delhi station upstairs from the main concourse. Very quick and efficient compared with the old days; always take the passports of every person for whom you making reservations. Long- distance buses leave from the inter- State Bus Terminus (ISBT) near Kashmir Gate north of the Red Fort. Advance booking is possible there for most destinations. Agents for many independent bus companies are located around Connaught Place.

Railway Stations

The main entrance to New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is located just outside of Paharganj, the backpacker ghetto. The Delhi Metro now connects directly here, but the metro exits are on the "wrong" (Ajmeri Gate) side near platform 12. You can also take prepaid rickshaws and taxis from the plaza outside the main entrance.The station is large, crowded, confusing and packed with touts, so allow one hour (yes, really) to find your train the first time you visit. Don't trust the electronic display boards, which often show incorrect information, instead listen to the announcements and ask multiple people in uniform until you find your train

Air

Delhi is a major gateway to the country and well-connected by air to all metros and as well to most cities with an airport. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is also busy with flights taking off to various corners of the globe.

The Indira Gandhi Airport has two terminals, which are 7km.away from each other. Terminal 1, for domestic flights is 12kms. from Connaught place. Terminal 2 is for international flights.

Local Transport

In New Delhi there are metered taxis and scooter- rickshaws; always insist on the meter being used. But the meters are often rigged. Besides buses, in interiors of Delhi, cyclerickshaws are used.

Flying

The Domestic Terminals and the international Terminal are 15 and 20 km respectively from the Connaught Place. There is a free bus between the two terminals. There are regular buses between the Terminals and Connaught Place run by the Exservicemen's Air Link Transport Service (EATS). These buses run from 4 am. In a year or two. Delhi will have a complete Metro rail link converting most of its far flung areas. On certain links the Metro is finished whereas work is in progress in many other places.

Travel Direction

Delhi is a major gateway for international flights and the Indira Gandhi International Airport is located in the southwestern region of the city. There are domestic flights to Delhi from all major Indian destinations. The Domestic Airport at Palam, is about 5 km away from the International terminal. Delhi is an important rail centre and long-distance trains head east to Kolkata via Varanasi, and south to Mumbai via Agra. Five National Highways pass through New Delhi. The Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 1) is used most frequently. Most cities and towns are located close to Delhi, and are well connected by road with driving time from Delhi to Agra and Jaipur being barely three hours. The main bus station is the Interstate Bus Terminal at Kashmiri Gate, north of the Old Delhi Railway Station. Popular bus routes head into Rajasthan via Jaipur, and to the hill stations of Himachal Pradesh.
