About Eden Garden Stadium

Eden Garden Stadium is supposed to be the largest in Asia with a seating capacity of more than a lakh spectators.

Eden Gardens is consider as the finest stadium in the world, it is also called as Lord's of Asia. The first match was played in 1917-18.

The magic of Eden Garden the portrait of Indian cricket was indelibly etched by the early English expatriates. That was 200 years ago, when in a pioneering zeal they banded together to form the Kolkata Cricket Club. In its edition of February 23, 1792 the Madras Courier reported that a cricket match was played of Englishmen residing in the districts of Barrackpore and Dum Dum.

With the year 1792 recognized by Wisden cricket almanack, Kolkata Cricket Club has come to acquire the reputation of being the oldest surviving cricket club outside the British Isles. Thus it stands established that organized cricket in India began in Kolkata.

It was one of the first cricket stadiums in India where floodlights were installed and Day and Night cricket was played with the gigantic electronic scoreboard. The first ever first class match to be played here was in 1917-18, while the first test match was against Douglas Jardine's MCC in January 1934. Since then the ground has hosted 30 Tests matches -the maximum at any venue in India. In February 1987 the stadium hosted its first ODI match against Pakistan. In all 16 ODI matched have been held here.

The stadium has had the privilege of hosting the most important of matches like World Cup Finals 1987, World Cup Semi Finals 1996, Hero Cup and many other tournaments. Winding paths intersects the green expanse dotted with beautiful trees and shrubs, including a large artificial lake joining the Burmese - style Pagoda, brought to Calcutta from Burma after the British victory in the Burmese war of 1884.
