Travel in Mangalore

How to reach

By Air

Mangalore city is accessible by almost all the transportation systems. The airport is 20 km from the city center. One can take the locally available road transport medium to reach the airport to catch a flight.

Bajpe airport (20 km) is linked with Mumbai, Bangalore and Kochi.

By Rail

The Mangalore train station is on the southern fringe of the city center. However, some of the trains stop at the Kankanadi Station situated 5 km east of the Mangalore main city.

The Mangalore Railway Station used to be the last station connecting Mangalore to the state of Kerala in the south and to the rest of the country. While the British had left behind an extensive railway network when they left India, the stretch between Mangalore - Mumbai, and Mangalore - Hassan had never been connected. There are many trains connecting Shoranur and Coimbatore.

From Mangalore there are trains to Delhi, Chennai, Agra, Hyderabad, and Thiruvananthapuram. There are daily trains to Hassan, including the Mahalaxmi Express, departing at 11:00 pm, and a passenger train (6½ hr), leaving at 6:10 pm. It is eighteen hours to Chennai on the Mangalore Mail #6002 and seventeen hours to Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum).

Road

Mangalore is well connected to Bangalore (347 km) by road. There are luxury coaches plying between the two cities. Mysore, Coorg, and Hassan also have road links with Mangalore.

The KSRTC long-distance bus station is 3km north of the railway station, near where most of the hotels are located (Rs 15 by auto-rickshaw). The buses heading north and east are usually much quicker than the train. There are daily buses to Hospet (Rs 11 hr), Mysore (7 hr), Bangalore (9 hr), Hassan (4 hr), Chennai (16 hr), Goa (11 hr, five daily), and Mumbai (24 hr). There are regular buses to Udupi.

Getting Around

The state transport system is well maintained and all the nooks and corners of the district can be reached by bus. But the roads are mean and winding, especially the ones that take you up into the hills or down the coastline. If you want to do things your way and at your pace, it's advisable to rent a taxi. A number of auto-rickshaws are also available in the main city area
