Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai

Venue Name Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)
Type Complex
Location East, Mumbai

Mumbai's diamond hub will be getting a new address very soon - the Bandra Kurla Complex. There are eight towers which are already ready, where the merachants will be shifting their businesses soon. During the course of next four months, the traders from Prasad Chambers, Mehta Bhavan, Dharma Palace, Panchratna Buidling and Shreeji Building will be shifting their offices to the new complex.

In 1977, the MMRDA was appointed as the Special Planning Authority for planning and development of this complex. It covers 370 ha. area of once low-lying land on either side of the Mithi river, Vakola nalla and Mahim Creek. The area had poor surface drainage and was severely affected by pollution in the Mahim Creek. One of the important features of the channelisation of Mithi river and Vakola nalla was to improve water carrying capacity and reduce pollution. Mithi River for about 4.5 km. of its length from Mahim Causeway to C.S.T. Road Bridge and its tributary Vakola Nalla, for 2.5 km. of its length, have been channelised for an average 60 m. and 40 m. bed widths respectively, thereby improving the hydraulic features of these two important water courses in the BKC area.

The commercial development in BKC includes private and government offices (state and central), banks, wholesale establishments, etc. and will provide ultimately about 200000 jobs in the area. The MMRDA has so far developed 19 ha. of marshy land in 'E' Block where a number of office buildings have been constructed. These buildings together provide an office space of 174,000 sq.m. with a potential to accommodate 17,400 jobs. In this block an Urban Plaza and Park has been developed on an area of about 22500 sq.m. this park is named as CITY PARK.

The bourse is finally nearing its completion and the diamond trading is expected to be shifted to the BKC complex before monsoon. The bourse will have a single window operation for all its 2400 members. Though the work of the tower had started sixteen years ago, in 1992, the disputes between the BDB committee and its architects and contractors over the payment delayed the project to such a great length. However, in the year 2001, the project was again re-started.

The swanky new building from where the merchants will carry on their business has eight towers with parking spaces and security measures. However, for security reasons gas powered stoves for making food or tea will not be permitted inside the complex. Instead, it will have a canteen exclusively for the traders. Meanwhile, the traders also feel that performing trading acts from inside the complex is ideal because there is no need to carry diamonds outside the complex. Moreover, this will also save time as it will be much easier for the foreign delegates to locate a trader in the complex.

This is the first in the series of new growth centers that are being planned in Greater Mumbai to help arrest further concentration of offices and commercial activities in South Mumbai. It provides an alternative location where future growth of offices and commercial activity can be absorbed and where some of the existing activities from South Mumbai can be relocated.

Side by side the development in 'E' Block, the focus of development of activities has also moved to the adjoining 'G' Block where a new International Finance and Business Center is planned.
