Soothing interiors, pleasant, smiling faces and care that exceeds the infrastructure - this just about sums up Sahyadri Speciality Hospital. A vast array of ultramodern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities - right from the 1.5 Tesla top of the line MRI to a specially built OT dedicated for Bone Marrow Transplants - back up the expertise of highly qualified and experienced medical and paramedical professionals. There is a 24-hour, well-equipped ambulance, a consultant physician available at all times and all systems in readiness and on the alert 24 x 7 to meet any emergency.
The hospital has an intricate network of computers that process and access information much faster, reducing patient inconvenience and enhancing staff efficiency. Sahyadri Speciality Hospital is not an urban hospital alone, for its outreach activities include rural clinics and running of the Madhav Smruti Memorial Hospital at Kurduwadi, about 130 km from Pune. Sahyadri Speciality Hospital is also the only hospital in India to successfully launch and run the "Samavedana" scheme for the exclusive benefit of the poorer section of society. Professionally managed by experts in medical administration, Sahyadri Speciality Hospital is setting new standards in health care.
Epilepsy however, is also a social disease in the sense that persons with epilepsy carry a social stigma which affects them throughout their lives. More often than not, they receive "special" treatment in spite of being more than capable of discharging their duties efficiently.
To meet this problem head on at the social level, PIN launched an Epilepsy Awareness Programme as part of its outreach activities. A team consisting of an Epileptologist, Clinical Psychlogist, Medical Social Worker and Public Relations Coordinator has been formed. This team organises awareness programmes on epilepsy for groups which vary from schoolteachers to white collar workers, college students to club socialites. The groups are informed about epilepsy, some of the known causes, types of epilepsy, do's and dont's when a person has seizures, psychological ramifications of epilepsy and other aspects. On receiving specific requests, the group visits the school or work place of persons suffering from epilepsy and holds sessions for their friends and colleagues, so that they understand the disorder better and are able to improve their relations with the epilepsy affected person. The social worker also irons out minor wrinkles in inter-personal communication and understanding.
